put up with
InseparableThe verb and particle never split. The object always follows the whole phrase.
How to say it
Main stress lands on the first particle: put UP with. The trailing “with” reduces almost to nothing — expect a schwa, not a full vowel.
The /t/ flaps. Between vowels, American /t/ and /d/ both become a quick tap, so “put up” comes out as “pu-dup” — closer to a fast D than a T.
What it means
To tolerate something unpleasant without complaining.
- “I don't know how she puts up with all that noise.”
- “He put up with the commute for three years.”
Similar: tolerate, endure, bear
