give off

Inseparable

The verb and particle never split. The object always follows the whole phrase.

How to say it

Stress the particle, not the verb: give OFF. Saying “GIVE off” is the clearest learner tell — the verb stays light and the particle carries the beat.

Link across the gap. The final /v/ of “give” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “give off” is said “gi-voff”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.

What it means

  1. To emit heat, light, a smell or an impression.

    • The heater gives off a faint burning smell.
    • He gives off a very calm energy.

    Similar: emit, radiate
