How to say it
Stress the particle, not the verb: give IN. Saying “GIVE in” is the clearest learner tell — the verb stays light and the particle carries the beat.
Link across the gap. The final /v/ of “give” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “give in” is said “gi-vin”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.
What it means
To stop resisting and accept what someone else wants.
- “After hours of negotiation, he finally gave in and gave them a better price.”
- “She kept asking until I gave in.”
