Discourse Markers

The upper Midwest (Minnesota, Wisconsin) has famous discourse markers:

  • "Oh yeah, no" — means "I agree with your statement, and no (that's not a problem)"
  • "No yeah" — means "yes, definitely"
  • "No yeah no" — means "absolutely not"
  • "Ope!" — said when bumping into someone or making a small mistake
  • "You betcha!" — enthusiastic agreement

These are deeply ingrained speech habits, not just slang.
