talk out of
SeparableThe object can go before or after the particle — but a pronoun MUST go in the middle: “clean it up”, never “clean up it”.
How to say it
Main stress lands on the first particle: talk OUT of. The trailing “of” reduces almost to nothing — expect a schwa, not a full vowel.
Link across the gap. The final /k/ of “talk” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “talk out” is said “tal-kout”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.
What it means
To persuade someone not to do something.
- “I tried to talk her out of quitting.”
- “His sister talked him out of it.”
