step in

How to say it

Stress the particle, not the verb: step IN. Saying “STEP in” is the clearest learner tell — the verb stays light and the particle carries the beat.

Link across the gap. The final /p/ of “step” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “step in” is said “ste-pin”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.

What it means

  1. To intervene in a situation.

    • A bystander stepped in before it turned into a fight.
    • The regulator stepped in and froze the account.

    Similar: intervene
