How to say it
Stress the particle, not the verb: settle IN. Saying “SETTLE in” is the clearest learner tell — the verb stays light and the particle carries the beat.
Link across the gap. The final /l/ of “settle” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “settle in” is said “sett-lin”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.
What it means
To become comfortable in a new home or job.
- “Give her a few weeks to settle in.”
- “We're still settling in after the move.”
