How to say it
Stress the particle, not the verb: break AWAY. Saying “BREAK away” is the clearest learner tell — the verb stays light and the particle carries the beat.
Link across the gap. The final /k/ of “break” moves onto the particle and starts its syllable: “break away” is said “brea-kaway”. Pausing between the words is what makes phrasal verbs sound recited rather than spoken.
What it means
To separate from a group or a controlling influence.
- “A faction broke away and formed its own party.”
- “She broke away from her family's expectations and moved abroad.”
