Phrases with TO

Mastering the reduction of "to" will make your English sound much more natural and fluent, helping you connect words smoothly in everyday conversation.

How to make it

  1. Relax your mouth completely.
  2. Shorten the vowel sound in "to" to a quick, unstressed schwa.
  3. Connect it to the surrounding words without a pause.

Watch out for

  • Over-enunciating the vowel in "to": Don't give "to" a full /u/ sound. It should be very quick and light.
  • Adding a pause before "to": The reduction happens when "to" blends with the word before it. Keep it flowing.
  • Using the reduction before a vowel sound: When "to" comes before a word starting with a vowel, especially a schwa or a short vowel, it's often clearer to pronounce the full vowel sound in "to".

Words to try

  • want to
  • need to
  • have to
  • going to
  • used to
  • try to
  • decide to
  • learn to

💡 Practicing these reductions will help you sound more like a native speaker and improve your listening comprehension!
