Producing /intone/

How to produce /intone/

Yes/no questions rise at the end ('Are you READY↗'). Wh-questions fall ('WHERE are you GOing↘'). Tag questions ('It's hot, isn't it?') rise when genuinely asking, fall when seeking agreement. L2 speakers often use a flat or L1-transferred contour, which natives hear as robotic or curt.

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'Are you ready?' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • Initial: ready, coming, hungry
  • Medial: where, when, who
  • Final: isn't_it, right, okay
