Intrusive R

Non-rhotic speakers sometimes add an /r/ between words when a vowel follows — this is called "intrusive R" or "linking R."

Examples:

  • "the idea of" → "the idea-r-of"
  • "law and order" → "law-r-and order"
  • "I saw a movie" → "I saw-r-a movie"

This is also common in British English and Boston English.
