/æ/ Raising
In the Northern Cities Vowel Shift, /æ/ raises dramatically:
- "man" sounds like "me-an" /meən/
- "bad" sounds like "be-ad"
- "bag" sounds very different from GenAm
- "hand" gets the raised vowel
This is most noticeable in cities like Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo.
