Producing /l / ɹ/

How to produce /l / ɹ/

/l/: tongue tip touches behind the upper teeth. /ɹ/: tongue tip does NOT touch — it curls back (or bunches). The two sounds are completely different articulations that many East Asian L1s collapse into one. If your tongue touches anywhere, it's /l/.

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'lice / rice' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • Initial: light, like, love
  • Medial: feeling, tomorrow, already
  • Final: pull, pearl, color
