Producing /tʃ / ʃ/

How to produce /tʃ / ʃ/

/tʃ/ is a brief stop (tongue seals to palate, like /t/) followed by /ʃ/. /ʃ/ is pure friction, no stop. Say 'ship' — continuous hiss from the start. Say 'chip' — you'll notice a tiny moment of silence first. Many L1s only have one of these.

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'chair / share' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • Initial: chip, chair, cheap
  • Medial: watching, kitchen, picture
