Master the /ʒ/ sound — VISION

Module 1 — Articulation & awareness · Lesson 1 of 5

Producing /ʒ/

How to produce /ʒ/

Same tongue and lips as /ʃ/ (she) — tongue raised toward the hard palate, lips slightly rounded — but add your voice so it buzzes. It hides in -sure, -sion and some French words. Common L2 errors: /ʃ/ without voice (vision → fission), /z/ (measure → mezzure), and /dʒ/ with a stop at the start (beige → beidge).

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'vision' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • -sure words: measure, pleasure, treasure
  • -sion and -sual words: vision, decision, television
  • End of the word: beige, garage, massage
