Master the /j/ sound — YES

Module 1 — Articulation & awareness · Lesson 1 of 5

Producing /j/

How to produce /j/

Start with your tongue in the /i/ (ee) position, high and forward, then glide quickly into the next vowel. It is a smooth glide, not a stop. Common L2 errors: a hard /dʒ/ (yes → Jess, yet → jet) and dropping it before /i/ (year → ear). It also hides inside words like music and cute.

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'yes' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • At the start: yes, you, year
  • Between sounds: onion, million, opinion
  • Hidden /j/ (music, cute): music, cute, few
