Master the /ɡ/ sound — GO

Module 1 — Articulation & awareness · Lesson 1 of 5

Producing /ɡ/

How to produce /ɡ/

Raise the back of your tongue against the soft palate, stop the air, then release it with your voice on — the voiced partner of /k/. Common L2 errors: final /ɡ/ devoiced to /k/ (bag → back, dog → dock), and a breathy /ɡ/ that sounds like /k/ at the start of a word (gold → cold).

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'go' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • Initial: go, good, game
  • Medial: bigger, again, sugar
  • Final: bag, dog, big
