Master the /f/ sound — FAN

Module 1 — Articulation & awareness · Lesson 1 of 5

Producing /f/

How to produce /f/

Rest your top teeth lightly on your lower lip and blow air through the gap — no voice. It is the voiceless partner of /v/. Common L2 errors: /p/ (fan → pan, both lips close), /h/ or a two-lip 'φ' (fine → hine), and voicing it into /v/ at the end (leaf → leave).

Practice the sound in isolation

Say 'fan' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?

A few varied words

  • Initial: fan, five, family
  • Medial: coffee, after, office
  • Final: leaf, life, laugh
