How to produce /link/
Native English speakers don't put silence between words. A word-final consonant jumps onto the next word's vowel: 'pick it up' → 'pi-ki-tup'. Word-final vowel → vowel gets a /j/ or /w/ glide: 'go on' → 'go-won'. Word-final /ɹ/ reappears in 'far away' → 'fa-ra-way'.
Practice the sound in isolation
Say 'pick it up' slowly. Hold the target sound. Record yourself — does it match your mental model of the native version?
A few varied words
- Initial: pick_it, go_on, far_away
- Medial: fill_it_up, look_at_me, call_us_back
- Final: here_it_is, come_in, stand_up
