Light L vs. Dark L

Mastering the two 'L' sounds in English will make your speech sound much more natural and clear. It's a subtle difference that native speakers notice!

How to make it

Light L /l/

  1. Lift the tip of your tongue to the ridge behind your upper front teeth.
  2. Keep the rest of your tongue relatively narrow.
  3. Release air over the sides of your tongue as you make a clear 'L' sound.

Dark L /ɫ/

  1. Relax the tip of your tongue; it might touch the ridge, or it might not.
  2. Pull back the back of your tongue towards the soft palate.
  3. Widen your throat slightly to create a deeper, fuller 'L' sound.

Watch out for

  • Using a Dark L at the beginning of words: This can make words sound heavy or unclear. — Always use a Light L when 'L' starts a word or syllable.
  • Using a Light L at the end of words: This can sound too sharp or unnatural. — Remember to use a Dark L when 'L' comes after a vowel or at the end of a word.

Words to try

  • Lamp, listen, clear, play
  • Ball, fill, cool, milk, people

💡 Pay attention to where the 'L' is in a word, and you'll naturally choose the right sound!
