Light L

Mastering the "Light L" sound will make your English sound much more natural and clear, especially at the beginning of words. It's a foundational sound that helps distinguish many common words.

How to make it

/l/
/l/
alveolar lateral
  • Lips: neutral
  • Tongue: tip-alveolar
  • Voicing: voiced

đŸ’¡ Tongue tip on alveolar ridge, air flows around sides.

  1. Lift the very tip of your tongue to touch the ridge right behind your upper front teeth (the alveolar ridge).
  2. Keep the rest of your tongue narrow and relaxed, allowing air to flow freely around the sides.
  3. Relax your lips; they should not be rounded.
  4. Keep your throat relaxed, with the back of your tongue only slightly raised.

Watch out for

  • Replacing with /r/: Make sure your tongue tip touches the alveolar ridge. For /r/, the tongue never touches the roof of the mouth.
  • Replacing with /w/: Ensure your lips are relaxed and not rounded. The /w/ sound involves rounded lips.
  • Making it too short: Try to hold the sound for a moment to really feel the tongue position and airflow.

Words to try

  • lamp
  • laugh
  • lemon
  • live
  • luck
  • lunch
  • clear
  • plan

đŸ’¡ Practice in front of a mirror to see your mouth and lip position, ensuring they stay relaxed!
