T + R

Want to sound more natural when speaking English? Mastering the "TR" blend is a great step, as it often changes from how it looks on paper.

How to make it

  1. Start by positioning your tongue as if you're going to say a T sound, but don't release it yet.
  2. Instead of a crisp "T", push your tongue forward slightly, almost as if you're preparing for a "CH" sound.
  3. As you release the air, blend it immediately into the "R" sound, letting your tongue curl back for the "R".
  4. The result should sound like a "CH" followed by an "R", rather than a distinct "T" and "R".

Watch out for

  • Pronouncing a clear /t/ then /r/ — The key is to blend them. Don't make two separate sounds; make one combined sound.
  • Not making the "ch" sound strong enough — The "T" really does transform into a "CH"-like sound, so make sure it's noticeable.

Words to try

  • train
  • try
  • control

💡 Practice these words slowly at first, then gradually speed up to integrate the new sound into your natural speech!
